Overview

Led the strategic redesign of LessonLoop’s educator-facing professional learning platform. Collaborated with Columbia University researchers to analyze data from usability tests, interviews, and academic studies, transformed the platform into an intuitive, self-paced professional development coach. Integrated all platform components to create a unified user journey that aligns teachers' classroom practices with their professional development, enhancing student engagement and contributing to measurable academic outcomes.

  • Red, yellow, and green scream a user is being assessed, which is swaying users from coming back to the site.

  • User should not be seeing detailed results on their class hub (confuses user on where they are in the flow)

Screenshot 2024-10-24 at 11.10.16 AM.png
  • Users can't visually compare their class' survey results. Have to investigate and remember results one survey at a time.

  • Too many actions causing confusion

Ideation

I reworked and created 5 main sections of the platform:

1. Onboarding / Create a Class Flow (re-framing the platform as professional development guided coach)

2. Class Hub (dashboard)

3. The Loop (survey creation and results)

4. Instructional Strategies (tips)

5. Professional Learning Hub (pl hours, achievements, and courses)

  • In-depth Teacher Interviews: Conducted over 15 interviews with educators across the U.S. to uncover insights into current student engagement strategies, challenges with professional development, and methods of tracking engagement in relation to academic success.

  • Collaboration with Education Experts: Worked directly with researchers from Columbia University's Teachers College to ensure a research-backed, pedagogically sound approach throughout the design process.

Implementation

Simplified the navigation to Class Hub, Strategy Hub, and Professional Learning Hub, while making the survey creation process into a step by step coaching experience following a Plan Do Study Act cycle.

Dashboard

Class Hub

Educators get real time student-voice feedback per class. Users can track their professional learning hours they earn while using the application as well as review their past survey results, track academic scores, and see the impact of personalized instructional strategies they test.

Consistent Layout

Easy next step lets users "hop back in" without confusion on where they left off.

Consistent Layout

Teachers can track their survey progression alongside of the instructional strategies they have tried. Users easily can track the relationship between academic results and student engagement.

Tying in professional learning throughout the platform.

Educators can track their student engagement by category or question level. Teachers can visually see the relationship between an instructional strategy and the research-backed learning objective of a question asked.

Building student/teacher relationships

Educators give a "Get to Know Your Students" survey at the beginning of the term to create a Class Learning Profile where they gain knowledge on student learning preferences, ways to creating a supportive classroom environment, and potential learning barriers for students in each class.

Survey Creation and Results

The Loop

Educators use a Plan-Do-Study-Act cycle by giving student surveys that capture real-time feedback on nine engagement categories after trying an instructional strategy in a lesson.

1. Create Survey

Educators create or select a recommended survey by choosing classes to issue the survey to, planning their lesson topic, and reviewing their opportunities for improvement based on the last survey results.

Recommended survey

Create your own survey

Recommended questions are guided by the previous survey results focusing on objectives to improve and teaching strategies to use to improve those objectives.

2. Issue Survey

After teaching a lesson, educators issue their survey (like an Exit Ticket). They can preview the survey with their students to support context to the lesson.

3. Gain Insight

After class, teachers review their survey results. Educators see their engagement results by category and can view student-voice feedback per question. LessonLoop affirms and supports users by celebrating the positive!

Educators can link an academic activity by grade average and grade median to track the relationship between student engagement and academic outcomes.

4. Try Strategy

To further professional development, educators reflect on their celebrations (top 3 survey questions) and biggest opportunities (lowest 3 survey questions). We offered a place of reflection to encourage thoughtful thinking and impactful. change. These reflections are kept in a reflection log and are available for review throughout the school year.

Educators can link an academic activity by grade average and grade median to track the relationship between student engagement and academic outcomes.

LessonLoop automatically provides an instructional strategy aligned with a lowest scoring question. Users choose an instructional strategy and then personalize the strategy in the AI Activity Generator.

The reflection log provides an opportunity for teachers to think about their lesson, review student-voice feedback, and challenge themselves to improve student engagement in their next lesson.

Transformed a robust database of over 5,000 instructional strategies, nine engagement categories, and survey questions aligned with targeted objectives into a cohesive, self-paced coaching product, enabling personalized guidance tied to specific instructional strategies.

LessonLoop has worked with renowned educators and Teachers' College of Columbia University, Center for Professional Education of Teachers (CPET) to create over 5000 instructional strategies that are aligned with the nine research-backed engagement categories, survey questions, and student learning objectives.
